Dream class

Throughout this year I have taught PE and weight lifting at the middle and high school levels. Dealing with students that dislike physical activity, do not participate, lack effort have really been challenging, and I will continue to use strategies to help the improve. Along with this I have also thought about how nice it would be if all my students loved physical activity. This dream has given me an idea on a class I would like to design once I get into my teaching career. One class that I would love to teach/ design would be called advanced conditioning or advanced athletics. Basically would be a class consisting of primarily athletes and would expose students to a variety of workouts and exercise programs that they could utilize after high school. This class would also be a great class for enspiring college athletes because it could get them used to the physical demands that college sports require. Students who don’t enjoy physical activity would not be involved in this class.

  1. It must be really difficult to get kids who have not previously been very active to get excited about physical activity. Is there a way to make certain activities more fun to spark the interest in more kids? Or have most kids already made up their mind by middle school and high school regarding their interest in physical activity and their interest is unlikely to change? I think that your dream class idea is a great idea. I would have loved an advanced class such as the one you described when I was in high school. I played soccer at EOU and I had no idea of the physical demands that playing a sport at college would require, I wish I had been better prepared and I am sure a class like this would have helped!

  2. That's such a great idea! Since there are advanced math, science, history, and other classes, it makes perfect sense to have advanced PE ones too. Hermiston High's new head football coach runs conditioning classes during their zero hour. I've also seen him teach the students in his normal weight training classes all aspects of proper form, technique, eating, and other healthy habits. The more serious athletes are gaining a lot of training that I had never observed when I was in high school. I think that your idea to take student athletes to the next level by preparing them for the rigors of college athletics is doing the very same thing as teachers in other content areas do with their advanced classes. Good luck with that!
